Pacquiao vs Barrios Fight Preview:
At 46, Manny Pacquiao is stepping back into the spotlight older than George Foreman was when he shocked the world in 1994 by defeating Michael Moorer to claim the IBF and WBA heavyweight titles. Pacquiao hasn’t fought professionally in nearly four years, having last stepped into the ring in August 2021 when he lost to Yordenis Ugas—a bout that itself came more than two years after his previous fight.
The Filipino icon remains boxing’s only eight-division world champion, having first captured the WBC flyweight title at just 19 years old. Over the years, he continued to climb weight classes and dominate, cementing his place as one of the sport’s biggest global stars alongside longtime rival Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Their long-awaited showdown finally happened after years of buildup and negotiations, though the fight itself didn’t quite live up to the hype. By then, Pacquiao had already suffered a controversial split-decision loss to Timothy Bradley and a brutal knockout in his fourth bout with Juan Manuel Marquez.
Despite the Mayweather loss, Pacquiao would go on to have two more championship reigns at welterweight, the last of which came with his win over Keith Thurman in 2019 when Pacquiao was 40 years old, more than 20 years after he won his first world title.
Now, Pacquiao looks to come back from a retirement, and a six-year stretch that has seen him fight professionally just once, to face a young, hungry champion in Barrios.
Barrios is no stranger to the spotlight. In 2021, he fought Gervonta “Tank” Davis, giving a fine account of himself in a slugfest before Davis scored a stoppage in the 11th round. Barrios followed up that loss with a decision loss to Keith Thurman in another headline fight.
